Creating A Safe Work Environment
If you are working in an office or lab with dangerous conditions, it might be a good idea to ask your superiors to invest in a few more safety precautions for you and your fellow employees. There are, of course, minimum safety codes that labs and offices must follow, but usually, this isn’t enough to prevent real disaster from striking if something really did go wrong. Asking your company for a few more fire extinguisher cabinets to increase the safety around the office is a great idea if you feel uncomfortable about the safety conditions in your work environment. If you don’t feel safe you probably aren’t and if would be smart to do something about it.
A lot of the time small companies overlook safety in a lot of cases because nothing has ever happened that would denote increasing their precautions. But that doesn’t mean that it won’t happen. Disaster strikes because of lax safety precautions all the time and if you feel uncomfortable, bringing it up is definitely the solution. If you want to wear disposable lab coats at work because the things you handle shouldn’t be on your regular clothes, then ask for them. It is well within your rights as an employee to bring it up. Make sure your workplace is up to your safety standard because if it doesn’t seem safe to you, others might be feeling the same way. This will improve the environment for everyone involved.
